The Sixth Judicial District has an immediate opening for a Law Clerk 1.

Hours:Monday – Friday 8:00A – 4:30P

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

To be successful in this position you will need to have the following:

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Knowledge of substantive and procedural law and statutes applicable to jurisdiction of the district court

  • The ability to draft rulings and orders on judges’ direction

  • The ability to research substantive legal issues for judges

  • The ability to assist the Administrative Judge with the motion calendar

  • The ability to attend court proceedings at the request of the judges

  • Critical thinking skills

  • The ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Detail oriented

  • The ability to work within a team of law clerks to meet the needs of the judges

Under the direct supervision of the staff attorney, candidates will have the desire to learn the complexities of our court case processing system using our statewide Electronic Document Management System (EDMS). This position may involve travel to other counties in the district, including Linn, Iowa, Jones, Benton, and Tama Counties.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited law school, is required. High standard of academic

excellence and considerable experience in legal research and writing are desirable.
