Primary Health Care Dental Area Director - Des Moines, Ames, & Marshalltown Clinics in Des Moines, Iowa

Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.

Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.

As an Area Director, you will be responsible for the overall operations of assigned clinical units to ensure achievement of financial, staff satisfaction, and patient satisfaction goals. You will work closely with the Clinical Directors (i.e. Medical Director, Dental Director, & Behavioral Health Director) for provider initiatives and provider satisfaction. You will also work closely with the Patient Services Director to ensure that the front office is achieving customer service and revenue cycle goals. You will oversee compliance with PHC policies and procedures and all regulatory and accrediting bodies, reinforces a culture of safety, and mitigates risk to ensure an optimal environment for staff and patients. You will also provide direction and oversight to the implementation of strategic initiatives.

This position will have responsibility for all four PHC dental clinics in Des Moines, Ames, and Marshalltown.

Ideal candidates for this position will have a strong background in dental clinic operations in either a clinical or leadership capacity.

    What You Will Do

  • Builds a clinic work culture based on PHC’s iCare values to promote effective working relationships among staff, providers, and between departments. Knowledgeable of internal resources and able to deploy relevant resources to address challenges and improve clinic operations.

  • Dental : Leads and supervises the dental Clinic Administrators to achieve PHC Way results including financial sustainability, staff satisfaction, and patient satisfaction. May lead and supervise other supportive staff within the assigned clinical units.

  • Manages finances for assigned units including, but not limited to, budgeting, monitoring revenue and expenses, overseeing purchasing, and making financial decisions that will assist clinic operations within budget parameters.

  • Collaborates with Clinical Directors on provider satisfaction, employee relations, evaluations, and productivity achievement.

  • Establishes clear expectations for staff; provides feedback on performance against expectations. Plans and implements interventions to ensure targets are achieved. Hires, trains, addresses employee relations concerns, and evaluates assigned staff. Identifies emerging leaders and provides leadership development opportunities. Collaborates with the training team to provide training necessary to improve outcomes.

  • Ensures thorough communication to assigned units in collaboration with Communications Department, Patient Services Director, and Clinical Directors. Ensures that daily huddles are happening and that relevant communication is passed through huddles. Designs and maintains additional communication channels to ensure staff at assigned units are informed of relevant organizational and departmental information.

  • Monitors and maintains compliance with PHC policies and procedures along with all external regulatory bodies such as Joint Commission and others. Collaborates with internal support departments on establishing and managing a safe work environment including performance of fire and emergency drills, life safety checks, equipment checks, and other monitoring activities in accordance with the Environment of Care plan.

  • Serves as a resource for process improvement activities and ensures Lean principles are incorporated into improvement efforts of assigned units.

  • Stays abreast of trends and best practices in ambulatory/community health and residency programs. Identifies and implements best practices and standards in coordination with the management team.

  • Directly leads a team of 2 - 4 individuals, with indirect leadership of 30 - 50 individuals.

    Qualifications You Need to Bring

    Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration or other related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 3 years of related experience in a leadership capacity.

  • Experience working with quality improvement practices such as Lean.

  • Experience with financial management and budgeting.

  • Experience working with a team approach to care.

  • Effective leadership skills with ability to coach, provide effective feedback and foster team engagement.

  • Effective management skills including the ability to plan, organize, prioritize and delegate to others.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to think critically and strategically.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Detail orientation with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Basic computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and electronic health records (EHR).

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.

  • High level of professionalism with ability to maintain composure in high stress situations and interact with others in an empathetic manner.

  • M ust supply own transportation to travel to PHC clinics and off-site work locations as needed.

  • Licenses & Certifications: Current driver's license and liability insurance coverage that meets State of Iowa requirements.

    Preferred

  • Completion of an accredited RN program accepted by the Iowa Board of Nursing for licensure, an accredited RDH program accepted by the Iowa Dental Board for licensure, or master’s degree in healthcare administration, or other related field.

  • Experience working in a community health center, residency program, or clinical leadership position

  • Experience with grant implementation and reporting

  • Current RN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing.

  • Current RDH license recognized by the Iowa Dental Board.

  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Certification.

  • Current Mandatory Reporter Certification approved for the State of Iowa.

  • Ability to effectively communicate in Spanish, verbally and in writing.

  • Working knowledge of accounts payable and cash collection principles.

    Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $70,400 - $88,000, though highly experienced candidates may earn more. PHC also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
