Position Overview

As aSr. Industrial Hygienistin the IOSHA Division, you will work under the supervision of the Health Bureau Chief at our central office near Valley Junction in Des Moines, Iowa. You will work together with program managers and other enforcement inspectors to eliminate workplace hazards in facilities across the state.

Responsibilities

You will be an integral member of our team, providing leadership and guidance to the department in support of the agency’s operations by:

  • Conducts regulatory inspections at various work sites across the state to ensure compliance with state and federal safety and health codes.

  • Performs on-site sampling of exposed personnel to chemical, physical or air borne hazards.

  • Interviews affected staff to determine workplace exposure and level of training.

  • Collects all relevant data for entry into the OSHA Information System utilized for casefile formation and management.

  • Proposes citations and penalties to identify and eliminate hazards.

  • Evaluates and approves the abatement efforts submitted by employers.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in industrial hygiene, chemical, civil, or mechanical engineering, environmental health, occupational safety, chemistry, physics, or a biological science;

OR

employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of three years of full-time work as a Field Safety Technician and thirty semester hours of college coursework which included chemistry (organic and inorganic), biology and physics; or one year of full-time work as a Safety and Health Consultant and twelve semester hours of college coursework which included chemistry (organic and inorganic) and physics shall be considered as qualified.
